Gourmet eating is usually associated with the art of fine food or haute cuisine. It consists of elaborate, contrasting courses and they describe the refinement of taste and passion for food. But that doesn’t mean that you cannot enjoy gourmet eating in the comfort of your own home. There are techniques to make the most out of your meals, while enjoying fancy dishes on a budget. The secret lies in some key ingredients that will give your meals a special flavor. All you have to do is:
Get out of your comfort zone. Choose less conventional market places. Look for any ethnic or farmer’s markets in your area. Ask the farmers for tips and tricks; they will be more than happy to share their knowledge. If possible, grow your own fruits, vegetables and herbs.
Go organic. Try to buy, as much as possible, whole and processed foods. The more you know about the place from where your food came from, the better. Skip the highly processed foods. They are usually high in salt, fats and other harmful ingredients.
Learn how to preserve your foods. Properly stock in your fridge the fruits and vegetables. Learn how to preserve the rest in your freezer. It will go a long way in saving you money, by not having to throw away what remains after cooking a meal.
Be extravagant about your spices. Increase your meals’ flavor by adding more exotic spices to it. Don’t skip out on grapesed or peanut oil, curry, turmeric, cardamom, red chillis. Most of these spices can be easily found and are not that expensive to begin with.
You can treat yourself to gourmet eating on a special occasion or on a regular basis, really. The secret is not to come up with fancy, expensive meals. But to make them up to be a little bit more special than usual. By getting out of your comfort zone (that you are so used to), you will discover a whole another world outside of your known cooking skills. Gourmet eating can be expensive, if we are talking about a restaurant. But at home, it can be whatever you want it to be. You can find wonderful, exotic combinations and alter the way you traditionally eat forever. You will enjoy so much this new way of eating that you’ll never want to go back to the old ways.
