Homemade Elderberry Tincture

Homemade Elderberry Tincture

Elderberry is one incredible healing powerhouse. When you use it externally, it can speed up wound healing. Internally it fights against colds, respiratory problems and coughs. This is an ingredient that has been intensely studied due to its immunity boosting properties. Take advantage of this amazing natural ingredient by making an elderberry tincture.

We have two methods for making the elderberry tincture. The first is with glycerin and the second with alcohol. Choose whichever one you like, because both are amazing.

For glycerin elderberry tincture. Take a glass jar and fill it 2/3 with freshly washed elderberries. Crush them a little using the back of a wooden spoon. This will allow the other ingredients to seep into the berries and combine better. Now, pour glycerin over the berries, within an inch of the top. Secure the lid on top of the jar and place it in a dark cabinet. Leave it there for 4-6 weeks, remembering to shake it every day. Or when you remember. When the time is up, strain the berries and keep the glycerin.

Alcohol elderberry tincture. Begin by washing the elderberries and then filling ½ of the glass with them. Pour vodka over the berries within an inch of the top. Place the lid on top of the jar and then give it a shake. Deposit the jar in a dark place, for 4-6 weeks. Give it a shake every now and then.  Once they are done infusing, strain the berries and keep the tincture. Store out of direct sunlight.

Why two recipes? Because they both have slightly different usages. The one with glycerin is, of course, alcohol free and it’s also more suitable for children. If you have an auto-immune disease then it’s best to talk to your doctor about using this tincture. It might stimulate your immune system too much.

Note: be careful with the type of elderberries that you use, because certain species are toxic. Also, try to use the ripe ones, regardless of the recipe.
