How to Use Coconut Oil in Ears

Coconut oil is probably a miracle ingredient. You can use it for a wide variety of purposes, to treat a large number of ailments. Did you know you can put coconut oil in ears too? If you have an ear infection, you can use it to clear it up. A study from 2008 showed that coconut oil is an effective remedy for viral and fungal infections. However, before starting the treatment, talk to a doctor first. Recurrent infections can be a sign of a more serious problem.

First of all, heat up 1/8 cup of coconut oil along with two garlic cloves. Using coconut oil alone is enough to treat an infection. However, health specialists recommend infusing the oil with garlic for some additional antibacterial benefits. Simmer the cloves for five minutes in the oil and then remove them from the heat.

Test the temperature of the oil before you put it in your ears. It should not be too hot. Somewhere around 37 degrees Celsius is enough. You can put the oil into a little eye dropper bottle, or use a pipette. Make sure no pieces of garlic get into the dropper.

Now, to put coconut oil in ears, lie on your side, with your ear pointing towards the ceiling. Use the dropper to put two drops of the oil into one ear. Wait around five minutes for the oil to take effect and get into your ear canal. Do not put any cotton or other types of material into the ear canal. This will prevent the oil from getting where it should be. After five minutes, turn onto your other side. Repeat the process with that ear too. However, you might not need to treat both ears, unless both are infected.

You should use the coconut oil in ears about twice a day for around a week. The symptoms usually disappear once the infection subsides. If your ear still gives you trouble and the discomfort does not go away, consult with your doctor.
