Falafel is made out of ground chickpeas, herbs and various spices. You roll all of these ingredients into a ball and then deep-fry it. Falafel contains lots of essential nutrients, although it also has sodium and saturated fats.  However, is falafel healthy? Should we continue indulging in this delicious dish? Additionally, falafel has 17.8 grams of fat per serving, out of which 2.3 grams are saturated. This should come as no surprise, because you need to deep fry them.

Minerals. When it comes to minerals, a ½ cup of falafel has 3.42 milligrams of iron and 585 milligrams of potassium. This makes up 12% of the 4.700 milligrams of potassium that you need every day. A serving of falafel supplies you with calcium, magnesium and zinc too. However, take care because it also has a high sodium content. Too much sodium can lead to an increased risk of heart disease.

Vitamins. A serving of 100 grams of falafel has 104 micrograms of folate. This is one fourth of the amount that adults need. Apart from this, it does not contain any other type of notable vitamins.

Therefore, is falafel healthy? The answer is: yes, it is, but not overly so. As long as you eat it in moderation then you are on the right track. Just keep in mind that vegetarian food is not always healthy. Even salads can be fattening if they have too much dressing. This chickpea and herb dish, along with the creamy dressing can also be a threat to your diet.

If you crave some falafel, you can opt to fry it in a pan instead of deep frying it. This will reduce the number of calories. Use cooking spray, because it makes it easier to distribute less oil.
