Mindful Eating

Mindful eating is based on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness and aims to make you enjoy more your food and be more aware of your eating experience.

In these fast-paced times, we have started paying less attention to our eating habits and practices. But the lack of awareness of the food we’re consuming only leads to obesity and other health issues. We no longer enjoy a food for its taste and flavors, but rather we eat so that we can go through another day. We pay little attention to acknowledging bodily sensations and too often we eat in front of our screens or on the rush.

Mindful eating comes to correct all this destructive behavior. Its aim is to improve your awareness and consequently your health and dietary choices.

Here’s some steps towards mindful eating:

Begin with your shopping list. The first and most important step of mindful eating is the food that you buy. In order to improve your dietary choices make a habit to read the labels more often, fill your shopping cart more from the produce section and avoid the center isles altogether.

Don’t wait until you’re extra hungry to eat. If you’re into the habit of skipping meals, your next meal will probably only fill the void in your stomach. You will be unable to enjoy your food and will consequently fill it with unhealthy choices.

Start making your meals smaller. Studies have shown that opting for smaller Mindful Eatingplates can reduce the food intake. Switch your plates to nine inches or less and you will start to see that you are eating less and are on the right path towards mindful eating.

Appreciate your food. A step often overlooked, we sometimes take food for grant

Bring all your senses to the meal. Your senses play an important role in appreciating your food and mindfully eating. From color, to texture and aroma, each ingredient is unique and gives off different sensations.

Take small bites. There’s no reason to rush; mindful eating aims to teach you to slow down and enjoy your food completely. Give up the habit of stuffing your mouth with food and put your utensils down between bites.

Chew thoroughly. The longer you chew your food, the more flavors will be released and the better your digestive system will become. Chew until you can taste the essence of the food and never again swallow your food whole.

Eat slowly. Make time to sit at the table and really eat. No matter how busy you might be, you can devote at least 10 or 15 minutes to mindful eating.

These are some of the most useful tips for mindful eating. In giving up certain bad habits and taking up more healthy ones you will become more aware of the beauty of the food that you eat. The eating process isn’t meant to be rushed. You are supposed to sit down and enjoy your food over a nice conversation, if possible. If you make just small adjustments and practice mindful eating every day you will start to see health improvements and you will be able to appreciate the culinary field at its best.
